New Mega Drive game titled "Tanglewood" in production.

Post by Monkeymook »

For those of you who have access to my Dropbox, you may remember some old files (before I moved them out of my 2612 folder) from the artist freezedream, who released their eponymous album "Today", on Mega Drive carts back in 2010.

As it turns out, freezedream is currently writing the soundtrack for the Mega Drive game Tanglewood, which is expected to be released at the end of this year.

Figured everyone might be interested.

Beautiful, thanks for sharing this. They made extensive use of the ADPCM channel and you can definitely tell it was used very wisely as it blends beautifully with the YM2612 tracks.

Really looking forward this.

I'm quite excited as well. The instrumentation they've created for the music as well as their use of in-game samples is pretty fresh. I'm wondering if this will incentivize other creators to make new games as well, and bring new life back to the console. It would be great to have new libraries of music to add to the site.

Decided to make an updated post of a response that I received from freezedream himself.

Initial Inquiry wrote:I help operate project2612.org. We are a music archival project, exclusively hosting music released on the Sega Mega Drive, 32X, and Sega CD. We host all logged and properly organized work on our website (although I handle organization in the forums mostly.)

<some information removed>we were hoping we could get in contact with the developers of the game (and of course you), to see about possibly providing/contributing unreleased or beta versions of tracks that might not make it to the official ROM dump from the game (when it's released.)

If that's something we'd need to get in contact with the game creators about, please don't hesitate to point us in the right direction!

freezedream's Response wrote:Thank you so much for your interest in my Sega music and the Tanglewood project as a whole. It's definitely an exciting adventure to be a part of! I'm slightly familiar with project2612.org and very happy to hear there's excitement over the development of Tanglewood.

At this stage I'm not sure if there'll be any unreleased or beta versions of tracks that don't make it into the official ROM dump, but there quite possibly will be. OK, having said that I did make a previous title theme that I've replaced so there's at least one track so far.

I think if the music is unused in the game then it won't officially be part of the soundtrack so it will be up to me what I do with it. I'll mention it to Matt, the game's creator anyway but I'm sure he'll be fine with it.

Thanks for your support!

A demo BIN file of Tanglewood has been released, and is available to play. A donation of $1.00 is requested on their site to download it, but it's not required.
