Genesis/Megadrive Model Number

Post by loridcon »

I'm trying to figure out what model number(s) (the MK-1601-XX) have an external YM2612.

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

I believe only the original model Genesis have a seperate YM2612. As of the Genesis 2, I believe they combined the Z80 and YM2612 chips.

The model number under the system is not too meaningful... only real way is to look inside...

MD2 VA2 has discrete YM2612
MD1 VA0 to VA6 have a discrete YM2612

MD1 VA7 have ASIC YM2612.
MD2 VA0, VA1, VA3 and VA4 have ASIC YM2612
Nomad, Xeye, Wondermega and CDX have ASIC YM2612
All Genny3 have ASIC YM2612. VA0 has same ASIC as VA4 MD2 so it can be made compatible with MCD, PBC, 32X and Virtua Racing.

I prefer the sound of ASIC version much more (after you have modded the analog parts for minimal distortion and filtering)... the sound is much cleaner (MUCH less aliasing noise).

I can write a lot of text regarding the ASICs etc, where different ones are used and what they contain etc.
Mida sa loed ? Nagunii aru ei saa ;)
