Best NON-Game VGM Music?

Post by Thermoptic »

Hi! Im looking for some good vgm tracks that are not from a officially released Genesis/Megadrive game. Like Freezedreams "Today" album: http://freezedream.bandcamp.com/album/today

What good artists out there are making music for the 2612?
Thanks for all recommendations!

I can support "Today." It's absolutely fantastic. The track Cardioid really makes the album.

Thanks Monkeymook, KeenanW. I Actually mentioned freezedream's album "Today" in my first post in this tread, its the only one i know and yes its amazing! :D

The reason im looking for good non-game tracks is that i want to find tracks that pushes the 2612 to the limit. Tracks that makes you go Wow! When i listed to some of the tracks of freezedreams album i could not believe it was the 2612, really amazing stuff. And i want more tracks like these, or just tracks that are pushed to the limit.

Its just this constant battle between the Genesis and the Super Nintendo.. what system has the best soundchip? And most people says the Snes is the best. And i want to collect the best vgm tracks just to show what the 2612 really can do. And i think stuff like freezedreams music shows just an example that the Genesis/Megadrive is better than the Snes chip.

And thanks for all the game vgm music tips, i will check them out! Would glad if you could post some youtube links to some of your favorite tracks that you think really shows what the 2612 can do! :)

Although some cool tools have been made for it, I think the Genesis sounds too polished to give that nasty, gritty, electronic sound. There's a few games that do it good, like Bio-Hazard Battle, Chakan, Toejam and Earl (PoF), two tracks from Dr. R's MBM, Battle Mania Daiginjou, Contra, Mega Turrican, and Knuckles Chaotix. That fucking dirty, grit-hell sound that Chakan has is what I'm talking about, but many games just have a smoothly-polished sound that just sounds like it comes from a modern computer/synth these days.

If there were more musicians who were bringing back those awesome Sega sounds in their music, I'd be making a hell of a lot more recommendations.

It's kind of ridiculous how much Air Dimension 1 from Chakan sounds like King Crimson.

But yes, many chip artists are too focused on the NES/Gameboy sounds. They're awesome tones, but the Genesis sound is severely underused and undervalued in the chip scene.

After discovering Shiru's VGM Music Maker I've been primarily doing music with it. Though I don't use PSG or DAC, but if anybody wants to have a listen: http://www.tomys.byethost33.com/ (sorry for the self-promotion)

I really like the TFM stuff Gorsal has made (http://www.youtube.com/user/NewAgeRetroGamer), some of the tracks have really great melodies. "Unstoppable" being my favourite. Hope more people would do vgm-music now as great new trackers are available, VGMMM & Deflemask.
