Anything else goes here that doesn't fit in the first two categories.

I see this thread has been resurrected in the spirit of Easter. Well then, I'll take it as a sign and respond. Keeping it brief:

Herzog Zwei
Metroid series (if I had to pick one game, Super Metroid)
Castlevania series (i'll pick one to exclude this time, SOTN *gasp!*)
Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy VI
Phantasy Star II
Thuder Force series (I'd have to select III as my favorite)
Secret of Mana
Deus Ex

Tough to keep it short, but I didn't want to diminish the weight of my choices by including too many. These are all top notch IMO.

Maybe this doesn't include computer game music. And it's ok, because It's hard to recall all the great music for C-64. But I would like to mention a bunch of of games from that department anyway, I have to :).

Here are some favorites

C-64

special favourites:
Last Ninja 1, 2, 3 ; Forbidden Forest ; Storm Warrior (Mark Cooksey)

and some more, for fun: Beyond the Ice Palace, Hysteria, He-Man, Olympic Skier, Friday the 13th, Rupert & the Toymakers Party, Uridium, Green Beret, Meanstreak, Archon, The Detective Game, Rambo, Nexus, Pitfall 2, Super Pipeline, Ramparts, Dream Warrior, Gyruss

Megadrive:

Light crusader
Strider
Sword of Vermilion
Ghouls ´n Ghosts
Golden axe 1, 2
Landstalker

Super NES

Castlevania IV
Secret of Mana

Playstation
Vandal Hearts
Vandal Hearts 2
Diablo
Resident Evil
Fade to Black (Raphael Gesqua)

There you have it. I could go into detail and talk about the games, but it would be too long. I have always had a special reverence for the music of Castlevania IV. There's no music similar to that, it's like a miracle.

I don't regret having not owned a NES or SEGA 8 bit. I dislike the sound of the NES, every game sounds the same to me. I guess it's the same with Sega 8 bit. One thing I regret though is not having owned a Saturn. The same with Amiga 500. But I have a Dreamcast.

I really like the soundtrack to Super Castlevania IV, as a set of music. I don't like it so much as the BGM to the game itself, though. I would have hoped for something a bit more poppy like with Rondo of Blood (when Vampire Killer starts out almost the same as Thriller, you know synth-pop works well in a "gothic" style) or Bloodlines.

It's not very "fun", something I like in my game music.

Super Castlevania IV has very interesting music. It's very atmospheric and not nearly as melodic as typical Castlevania soundtracks, if I remember it correctly. I would call it "sophisticated."
