A little heads-up on registrations due to the spambot flood

Post by Dark Pulse »

Registrations (at least temporarily) will have to be admin-approved before you can post, due to a dearth of spambots that decided to wallop us yesterday. I've set some more stringent checks for them, but I'll be leaving the board on a admin-approved registration for a little while until I feel they get bored and move on.

I, admittedly, don't check my email hugely often, but ValleyBell also has the ability to approve registrations; if for some reason it's been more than a day or two and nobody's approved you, hit our IRC channel (irc.bemanistyle.com, channel #project2612) and send me a message through there; I do leave IRC running 24/7 and so I'll respond to it as soon as I can. (It may not be immediate; I may be doing something or sleeping, etc.)

Ah, so that's why I woke up with 37 new emails in my inbox all originating from the same source.

I've implemented reCAPTCHA and it is catching most of the automated registrations. A few still trickle through, however.

We apologize during this time and we're working to keep things clean and tidy as best as we can.

Man you should put another control on registration as the bots are flooding again the forum :(

You should put a question like "Who produced the YM2612 chip?" -> "Yamaha"
There's no way an automatized spambot can reply to such question.

Sorry, but something like this is exactly what we had when the spam flood started.

ow :(

Then... don't know. On my forum I've put that the first post has to be approved by an admin or mod before it becomes visible but it can be tiring on the long run to approve the first posts of all the new members.

Maybe you can use a "stronger" captcha? Just throwing some ideas in the mix, I don't really know how advanced bots have become.

Which sort of captcha did you have to do when registering, btw?
It should've been Google's reCaptcha, which is one of the strongest ones, AFAIK.

Yeah, it definitely is and that's what I did what I registered here.

Since the spambots are not stopping for some reason, registration is disabled until further notice. You will have to contact Valleybell or myself to set up an account.

This just in: Registration has been disabled. Again. If you want to be a member of PJ2612, and ARE NOT A SPAMBOT, contact either DarkPulse (via IRC) or ValleyBell (via IRC, IF he's there), and maybe, they'll set you up. If you behave nicely. ;)
